Earthquake Focal Mechanisms as a Stress Meter of Active Volcanoes

نویسندگان

چکیده

The orientation of faulting associated with volcano-tectonic earthquakes follows the stress field there, as tectonic earthquakes. Therefore, changes volcanic activity change fault orientations or focal mechanisms. Zhan et al. (2022; https://doi.org/10.1029/2022GL097958) observed temporal mechanisms unrest. They decomposed into ambient differential stress, volcano loading, and by dike intrusion; they then evaluated their relative contributions to constrain magnitude that is consistent observation. This study indicates can be used monitor state an active volcano. Combining other geophysical observables, such seismic anisotropy geodetic measurements, will give us more precise assessments state, leading better forecasts activity.

Determining the Stress Field in Active Volcanoes Using Focal Mechanisms

Stress inversion of seismological datasets became an essential tool to retrieve the stress field of active tectonics and volcanic areas. In particular, in volcanic areas, it is able to put constrains on volcano-tectonics and in general in a better understanding of the volcano dynamics. During the last decades, a wide range of stress inversion techniques has been proposed, some of them specifica...

Earthquake triggering of mud volcanoes

Mud volcanoes sometimes erupt within days after nearby earthquakes. The number of such nearly coincident events is larger than would be expected by chance and the eruptions are thus assumed to be triggered by earthquakes. Here we compile observations of the response of mud volcanoes and other geologic systems (earthquakes, volcanoes, liquefaction, ground water, and geysers) to earthquakes. The ...

State of Stress from Focal Mechanisms Before and After the 1992 Landers Earthquake Sequence

The state of stress in the Eastern California Shear Zone (ECSZ) changed significantly because of the occurrence of the 1992 Mw 6.1 Joshua Tree and the Mw 7.3 Landers earthquakes. To quantify this change, focal mechanisms from the 1975 Galway Lake sequence, the 1979 Homestead Valley sequence, background seismicity from 1981 to 1991, and the 1992 Landers sequence are inverted for the state of str...

Physical mechanisms for vertical-CLVD earthquakes at active volcanoes

[1] Many volcanic earthquakes large enough to be detected globally have anomalous focal mechanisms and frequency content. In a previous study, we examined the relationship between active volcanism and the occurrence of a specific type of shallow, non-double-couple earthquake. We identified 101 earthquakes with vertical compensated-linear-vector-dipole (vertical-CLVD) focal mechanisms that took ...

Stress Orientations Obtained from Earthquake Focal Mechanisms: What Are Appropriate Uncertainty Estimates?

Crustal stress orientations provide important information about the mechanics of regional deformation. Numerous methods exist for inverting earthquake focal mechanisms for stress orientation, and the more widely used methods usually obtain similar results for similar data sets. However, error estimates are highly variable, complicating the interpretation of results. The southern California stre...
